Bearers of the Tradition of Folk Crafts in 2006
Within Government Decree No. 5/2003 Coll., on Ministry of Culture awards, implemented by Order of the Minister No. 13/2003, Minister of Culture Vitězslav Jandák has bestowed the 2006 "Bearer of the Tradition of Folk Crafts" titles on the following folk artists:
Josef Hruška (*1941), Valašské Meziříčí. This blacksmith and farrier, who was awarded the title "Artistic Craftsman" in 1988, was trained by his father and is continuing the family tradition. He is skilled in all traditional blacksmith technologies which he demonstrates at the day of old crafts in the Valašské Open Air Museum, and at a number of other places in the Czech Republic. He passes his knowledge to many successors including the youngest generation of apprentices. Hruška's excellent knowledge of traditional technologies is respected by the whole community of blacksmiths who recommended him for the award.
Jaroslav Sucháček senior (*1936), Lhota u Vsetína. He comes from family which has a long tradition in the manufacture of sharpening stones, but also its last upholders in the region. He is skilled in all technological procedures - stone mining and splitting, making of semi-finished products and their grinding and smoothing into the final shapes which are many and range from sharpening stones to naturally shaped souvenirs. He presents his products and skills in the Valašské Open Air Museum and many exhibitions at home and abroad - in England, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and other countries.
Ludmila Kočišová (*1931), Vnorovy. She comes from an environment where the processing of maize husks had a long-standing tradition that was followed by extensive home manufacture. Under the patronage of the Centre for Folk Art Manufacture (ÚLUV), where Ludmila Kočišová was employed, this production was greatly increased and aesthetically enhanced. Thanks to her natural artistic talent and skill, from the early stages of her career she developed the types of products and their artistic appearance. Her works are presented at numerous exhibitions at home and abroad, she trains her successors, and in her locality is considered a guarantee of the good quality of products.
Dana Ptáčková (*1950), Morkovice. She comes from the broad "family" of Morkovice basket makers, intentionally following in the footsteps of their fame, knowledge of techniques, highly aesthetic elaborate forms and work patterns. In the middle generation of producers she now ranks among determined bearers and followers of the local handicraft tradition, while enriching it with new impulses. Her work is notable for clean lines and shapes, and perfect workmanship of the adopted weaving style that is thus used also by fashion designers (I.Vítová). She is willing to show her craftsmanship and skill to the public at markets, specialised events of museums, and handicraft courses, where she is an instructor. The range and quality of her products were presented at the 2001 exhibition "Dana Ptáčková's Wicker World" at the Masaryk Museum in Hodonín.
Miloslava Zatloukalová (*1959), Brodek u Konice. She comes from a locality where straw plaiting has a tradition of several centuries that her family is trying to maintain. Her work is based on traditional forms that were developed under the patronage of the Centre for Folk Art Manufacture (ÚLUV) and acquired highly aesthetic appearance acceptable for present-day users. Her products are made of plaited straw pieces, such as place mats, bags and hats. Products made in a different way are straw bowls, baskets, woven mats and, last but not least, plaited straw Christmas decorations. Ms Zatloukalová's products can be seen at various demonstration events, in gift shops, and also during specialised programmes of museums, including open air ones. She shares her experience at handicraft courses, and passes it on within the family to her daughter, who assists the folk artist in her workshop.
The titles will be awarded in a ceremony on the occasion of the National Opening of European Heritage Days in Jičín on 9 September 2006
